Baby Not Moving — Count 10 Kicks
Fewer than 10 movements in two hours during the baby's active time needs attention

What is this?

A healthy baby moves regularly inside the womb from around the fifth month of pregnancy onward. You may feel kicks, rolls, or flutters many times each day. Babies also have quiet periods when they sleep — this is normal. But during the time the baby is usually active, it should move at least 10 times in two hours.

If the baby seems quiet, find a peaceful moment, lie down on your left side, and count every movement — every kick, roll, and flutter. Try drinking something cold or sweet first, as this often wakes the baby. If you still count fewer than 10 movements in two hours, this is a sign to go to the PHC the same day.

What to do now
  • Lie down on your left side in a quiet place
  • Drink something cold or sweet to wake the baby
  • Count every kick, roll, and flutter for two hours
  • If fewer than 10 movements — call your ASHA and go to the PHC today

Pathway: ASHAPHC (same day)

⚠️ When is it dangerous?

If the baby makes fewer than 10 movements in two hours during the time it is usually active, this is a warning sign that needs the same-day attention of a doctor. Do not wait to see if movement returns the next day. Call your ASHA and go to the PHC today. The doctor will listen to the baby's heartbeat to confirm that everything is safe.
