What is this?

Blurred vision, double vision, or seeing dark spots and flashing lights during pregnancy is not normal. It is a sign that blood pressure has risen to a level that is affecting the blood vessels in the eyes and brain. This symptom can appear suddenly and may come and go, making it easy to dismiss — but it must not be ignored.

A blood pressure check must happen the same day. Even if the blurring has passed by the time the woman reaches the facility, the blood pressure reading will show whether there is a danger. If the reading is 140/90 mmHg or above, she must go on to the CHC or District Hospital without further delay.

What to do now
  • Go to the PHC the same day — do not wait overnight
  • Have your blood pressure measured as soon as you arrive
  • Tell the doctor exactly when the blurring started and what it looks like
  • If BP is 140/90 or above — go to the CHC or District Hospital right away

Pathway: ASHAPHC (same day)CHC / District Hospital if BP ≥ 140/90

⚠️ When is it dangerous?

Blurred or flashing vision in pregnancy becomes a medical emergency when it is combined with headache, face or hand swelling, or upper belly pain — especially after the third month. A blood pressure reading of 140/90 mmHg or higher alongside these visual symptoms means the woman must reach the CHC or District Hospital the same day. Do not wait overnight.
