What is this?
If a pregnant woman suddenly collapses and cannot be woken, or cannot respond to her name or to touch, she has lost consciousness. This is a medical emergency. The cause may be severe fits (eclampsia), a very heavy internal bleed, dangerously low blood count, or a sudden severe drop in blood pressure. In every case, she must reach the CHC or District Hospital within minutes.
Do not try to wake her by shaking her hard. Do not give anything by mouth β no water, no food, no medicine. One adult must stay with her at all times. Phone 108 immediately. Another adult must ride in the ambulance with her β she must never travel alone.
- Lay her on her side (recovery position) β tilt her head back gently to keep airway open
- Do NOT put water, food, or medicine in her mouth
- Phone 108 immediately
- Keep her warm and stay with her until the ambulance arrives
- An adult must travel with her in the ambulance β she must not be alone
Pathway: π 108βCHC / District Hospital
There is no safe waiting time when a pregnant woman is unconscious. Call 108 the moment she collapses. Do not wait at home trying home remedies or hoping she will wake up. An adult attendant must be in the ambulance with her at all times. This is an immediate life-threatening emergency.
