What is this?

When the inner eyelids and the fingernails look completely white or almost colourless, and the woman cannot stand without support, her blood count has fallen to a dangerously low level. This is severe anaemia. The body does not have enough red blood cells to carry oxygen to the muscles and organs. She may feel she is about to faint, or her head spins when she tries to stand.

This level of anaemia is a medical emergency. The woman may need a blood transfusion β€” a treatment that is only available at the CHC or District Hospital. Iron tablets will not work fast enough at this stage. She needs emergency hospital care right now.

What to do now
  • Tell your ASHA immediately
  • Go to the CHC or District Hospital right now β€” she may need a blood transfusion
  • Do not try to manage this with tablets or home remedies
  • If she cannot walk β€” carry her and call 108 for an ambulance

⚠️ When is it dangerous?

When the inner eyelids are completely white and the woman cannot stand without help, or feels she is about to faint β€” this is a blood-transfusion emergency. Iron tablets act too slowly. She must reach the CHC or District Hospital the same day. Delay is extremely dangerous, especially close to delivery.
