What is this?

A headache that keeps coming back is not just simple tiredness. It means the head feels heavy, tight, or throbbing even after sleep and rest. It may be there most of the day, or it may return every day. This kind of headache can be a warning sign of high blood pressure in pregnancy, called pre-eclampsia. High blood pressure can harm the mother’s brain, kidneys, and other organs, and it can also affect the baby’s growth. That is why it is important to notice a headache that does not go away and take action early.[1]

Sometimes this headache gets worse over a few days. It can be felt more in the second and third months of pregnancy and later in pregnancy too. The woman may feel dizzy, tired, or feel pressure behind the eyes. If the headache comes with blurred vision, swelling of the feet or face, or pain in the upper belly, it becomes more dangerous. Early care can prevent serious problems like fits, stroke, or loss of the baby.[1]

What to do now
  • Tell the ASHA about the headache at her next home visit or by phone
  • Drink clean water often and take regular rest in a quiet, dark room
  • Avoid very salty food and self-medicines for headache without a doctor’s advice
  • Go to the Sub-Centre if the headache lasts more than 2 days or keeps coming back

⚠️ When is it dangerous?

A recurring headache in pregnancy becomes dangerous when it lasts more than one full day, happens almost every day, or becomes stronger over time. It is especially worrying if it comes with blurred vision, seeing spots, swelling of face or hands, or pain in the upper belly. In these situations, the woman should go to the Sub-Centre or PHC on the same day to have her blood pressure checked and get proper treatment.[1]
